- This figure includes those committed on remand and for trial.
- This figure includes those committed under sentence by the courts, committed on remand and subsequently recommitted on conviction, committed for trial and subsequently recommitted on conviction as well as those recommitted for breaching their parole, temporary release and/or absconding.
- Neither the Irish Prison Service Report on Prisons and Places of Detention for the Years 1995-1998, nor the Irish Prison Service Report 1999 and 2000 contain seperate statistics on remand or sentenced committals.
- The total committal figures for 1995-1998 are based on the total committal figures presented on page 80 of the Irish Prison Service Annual Report on Prisons and Places of Detention for the Years 1995-1998.
- The total committal figures for 1999 and 2000 are based on the total committal figures presented on page 78 of the Irish Prison Service Annual Reports for 1999 and 2000.
- The total number of committals on remand was not available in the Irish Prison Service Annual Reports for the years 2001-2004 inclusive. As a result, the total number of committals on remand was calculated by subtracting the total number of sentenced committals and committals on immigration warrants (where this figure was available) from the total committal figure as presented in the Irish Prison Service Annual Report for the years 2001-2004.
- The figures for 2003 are based on the revised figures for 2003 presented on page 10 of the Irish Prison Service Annual Report 2004.
- The figure for sentenced committals used here is that quoted in the 2006 Irish Prison Service Annual Report as including individuals who were already in custody on remand at the beginning of the year and subsequently recommitted on conviction, as well as all committals directly under sentence. This is congruent with our method of calculation for all previous years.
- Those committed under category 'indefinite contempt of court'.
- This figure is higher than the total committals figure quoted in the Irish Prison Service Annual Report 2006. This is because the figure quoted in the Annual Report 2006 (12,153) does not appear to include committals which were already in custody on remand/ awaiting trial at the start of the year and were subsequently recommitted under sentence. According to the Irish Prison Service Annual Report 2006, 160 committals were in custody at the start of the year on remand/ awaiting trial and were subsequently recommitted on conviction. This increases the total committals under sentence figure from 5,642 to 5,802 and the total committals figure by an equivalent amount.
