The figure for sentenced committals used here is that quoted in the 2006 Irish Prison Service Annual Report as including individuals who were already in custody on remand/ awaiting trial at the beginning of the year and subsequently recommitted on conviction, as well as all committals directly under sentence. This is congruent with our method of calculation for all previous years.
